It can be very overwhelming looking for your first vape because of all the options. Luckily we have you covered and will go into detail about each type of vaporizer, what the differences are, and how they work. This way you’ll be able to form an educated decision on which vape is perfect for you.

There are two categories of vapes when it comes to cannabis. You have your dry herb vapes which are used for vaping flower. On the other hand you have extract vaporizers which allow you to vape oil and wax. The two have so many subcategories that meet different requirements and do completely different things, it can get pretty complicated to sort through them. Thankfully we’ve written this guide to help guide you on your way.

What are the two categories for weed vaporizers?

Dry Herb Vaporizers

Dry herb vapes are portable devices that are basically a battery attached to a chamber for heating. You place your flower into the chamber and the battery heats it up typically using either conduction or convection heating. If you want to learn more about that you can check out our guide on the different types of dry herb vaporizers. Anyways, heating the flower extracts the THC and cannabinoids out into a vapor that you inhale. These vapes are usually pretty easy to figure out how to use, and they heat up in around 30-45 seconds. Once it reaches around 390 degrees Fahrenheit which is the vaping point for dry herb, it’ll stay at that temp long enough for you to take a fulfilling hit. After this the herb will be used and will need to be replaced.

Extract Vaporizers

Extract vaporizers are vapes made for oil and wax also known as dabs. Dispensary’s around the US and CA have plenty of options for sale when it comes to cartridges, and even vapes themselves as well. Extract vaporizers require less power to vaporize your wax than flower ones do and due to this, you will usually find these vapes looking like pens. Dab Pen or Wax Pen is a common name you will hear people call extract vapes because most of them literally look like a pen. They do not require as much battery, so instead the goal with most of them is to be discreet and accessible.

How do Vaporizers work?

The basic inner components of a vaporizer is the battery, a heating element, and a mouthpiece. They’re pretty simple, yet there is so many options to pick from.

The battery provides energy to heat the heating element to the correct temperature. Once it reaches the right temp, it will start to vaporize your extract / flower without burning it to.
